The development of artificial intelligence (AI) for use across multiple industries was boosted in 2020, with the arrival of the global pandemic.
From medicine to meetings
AI was used to provide enhanced virtual conferencing experiences and access to tools that enable productivity, regardless of location. In medicine, AI-supported research in the fight against COVID and even helped us to monitor our own personal oxygen saturation levels and heart rate. All things which will continue to evolve in 2021.
Autonomous Vehicles
Self-driving vehicles have been deployed internationally, in California USA, providing business delivery solutions. So, what does this mean for South Africa? Will we see self-driving vehicles on our roads soon? It seems unlikely, according to the IOL article which inspired this post. The article explains that the AI behind automated driving is based on the traffic rules, which is used to anticipate certain behaviour from other vehicles and to make decisions. With the observance of South African drivers’ flexible approach to road rules, the introduction of this technology is unlikely to happen in the near future.
