The South African Motor Body Repair Industry – An industry in crisis

The South African Motor Body Repair industry appears to be an industry in crisis. Perhaps it’s time to shift the balance to favour consumer choice?

For years a relatively overtraded motor body repair sector has scrambled for a share of the insured motor body repair market. During that time insurers have deftly swung administrative costs to their Motor Body Repair (MBR) service providers and used the overtraded environment to reduce labour income in real terms. More recently they have started to infiltrate the parts market, further eroding the margins of the insured MBR sector.

It is time the MBR and parts supply and insurance industries became strategic partners to ensure a more equitable and sustainable working environment – one which favours customer choice and benefits all parties.

This month SAMBRA features as Association of the month in Automobil magazine where we discuss potential ways forward for the motor body repair industry.
