Young talent need to see what the world of work looks like

As a sector we need to be engaging with young learners at schools to show them what opportunities exist in our sector. A degree is not for everyone and a TVET qualification can be an excellent alternative and almost guarantee employment.

The reality is South Africa’s technical trades are quietly facing a crisis. The backbone of our automotive and transport sectors – mechanics, electricians, and panel beaters – are ageing fast, with the average artisan now over 50. At the same time, too few young people are stepping in to replace them.

As SAMBRA we need to look at how we can be more visible at schools, how we can work more closely with TVET Colleges and how we can open up our shops to young people who want to job shadow and see first hand what our body shops look like. It is only is this way that we can build a pipeline of young talent.

We have an opportunity immediately with Kids Haven. They have young people who are looking for workplace experience – we will be sending out a notification in this regard to see which shops are keen to offer this opportunity.
